Daguerreotype Cased in Leather Birds Doves Eating Grapes Reference to Zeuxis Young Man 1850s 1860s Victorian
In the tooled leather of the case, doves peck at grapes in reference to the famous story of the classical painter Zeuxis: "When Zeuxis unveiled his painting of grapes, they appeared so real that birds flew down to peck at them." The practice of photography, which created incredibly lifelike portraits, was often compared to this story from antiquity.
SIZE: Case 3.75" T x 3.25" W x .625" thick
CONDITION: Pictures show all. Image is faint and ghostly, and all parts of case are there, but the two sides of the case are no longer attached.
