Michael Costello Painting Provincetown Self Portrait Oil on Canvas 1979 Cape Cod Artist
On offer late 1970s self portrait by noted Provincetown, Cape Cod artist Michael Costello. Signed on face and signed and dated on reverse 1979. The artist continues successful art practice in Provincetown to this day, and he has authenticated this self portrait. Costello's work has been widely shown and collected from the 1970s to the present day. Many times over the course of his career he has returned to self portraiture in oil, but he is also known for his drawings, allegorical themes and studies of reflection.
This painting displays masterful exploration of texture, from the glass of the window pane and eye glasses to the dirty plaster of the wall to the texture differences between his hair and beard. This is truly an exceptional self portrait, but stands on its own as a figurative work representative of the period. Though Costello clearly looked to modern masters such as Hockney, he developed a visual language all his own. Just this year a portrait by Costello from the same period has been added to the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC.

If you have any questions or are interested in the piece, please do not hesitate to contact me. New items are often posted to Instagram first, @NickHausShop
SHIPPING: On items over a certain amount, this shop is programmed for free shipping. This happens very rarely, but if the real cost of postage to you is wildly above the estimate I may have to charge a modest amount for delivery, which will only reflect the real cost with no markup. Thankfully, this is very seldom the case, and mostly occurs with overseas or West Coast sales. If you'd like me to check in advance, please let me know. Again, this is a rare situation.
